Fulvestrant is a steroidal antiestrogen that is used in the treatment of hormone-receptor positive metastatic breast cancer. Fulvestrant is used for treatment of hormone receptor (HR)-positive metastatic breast cancer in post-menopausal women with disease progression following anti-estrogen therapy. It is an estrogen receptor antagonist with no agonist effects. It works both by down-regulating and by degrading the estrogen receptor. It is a 3-hydroxy steroid that is 17beta-estradiol in which the 7alpha hydrogen has been replaced by a nonyl group in which one of the hydrogens of the terminal methyl has been replaced by a (4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropentyl) sulfinyl group.
